Part 3: Stay The Night

Just then his phone rings. Answering it, this is Jack. What’s up, Bobby? Then he turns away from Sue; so she can’t hear what the two of them are saying.

Bobby: Hey, you want to hang out tonight, go bar hopping so you can pick up women?

Jack: Darcy lets you hang out at bars? Aren’t you two an item? (laughs)

Bobby: Darcy trusts me. And going bar hopping is a guy thing, I am worried about you. When was the last time you went out on a date, Sparky? (laughs)

Jack laughs, remembers dancing in Paris with Sue, and doesn’t say anything. Bobby laughs and says I rest my case.

Jack: Excuse me, Aussie pop? (laughs at Bobby) You worried about my love life? You are not making much sense. But that’s not unusual for you, Crash.

Bobby: You bet I am. If there is such a thing as your love life, which I don’t see any evidence of that fact. (more laughs)

Jack: Your concern is touching, Crash. But I am doing just fine on my own. As a matter of fact, I don’t need to go to a bar ever again because I already have someone special.

Bobby: What did you just say, Sparky?

Jack: I’m busy, Crash. I have company. We’ll hang out some other night. Call you later.

Jack hangs up the phone, but not before Bobby hears Sue in the background saying something to Jack. So Bobby calls Jack again.

Jack: Crash, are you trying to interrupt my evening or what? (laughs)

Bobby: That depends on what you are doing? (laughs)

Jack: I’m watching a movie with a friend. Is that what you want to hear?

Bobby: This friend of yours, she wouldn’t happen to be good at reading lips? She wouldn’t be at your place right now, would she?

Jack: Crash, you better not be spying on me, you hear me? I will tell Darcy all your skeletons. I know where all the bodies are buried. (laughing)

Bobby: Not a chance, Sparky. (laughing) Tell me who you are with? I promise to keep my mouth shut.

Jack: Fine. I’ll tell you. It’s movie night at my house. Sue and Levi are here to keep me company. That should satisfy your prying eyes. (laughs)

Bobby: I knew it. Say Hi to our lovely Sue. I’ll call you later for the inside scoop.

Jack: Anything to make you go away, Aussie pop. I would like to watch the movie in peace. (laughing at Bobby)

Bobby: Alright, my boy. Just be careful. And don’t do anything I wouldn’t do. (laughs)

Jack: That’s it. I’m hanging up the phone. If you know what’s good for you, you won’t call me back. No more interruptions. I mean it. Goodbye, Crash. (laughs)

Bobby: Gotcha. No worries, Sparky. I promise to leave you two lovebirds alone.

Jack comes back and sits on the loveseat next to Sue.

Sue: What did Bobby want?

Jack: You don’t want to know. (laughs)

Sue: Too bad. If you’re not going to kick me out immediately, do you want to watch a movie? Just remember that I have to watch close captioning. Not many people like that about me. (smiles)

Jack: Sure. No problem. Which one do you want to watch first?

Sue: Intolerable Cruelty. I like that one the best, George Clooney is very good-looking. (Smiles at Jack)

Jack: Oh really? You think so; George Clooney is way better looking than me?

Sue: Yes. I mean no. You are more handsome than George Clooney. Are you happy now? (Laughs)

Jack: Yes. Nice save, Thomas. Let’s just watch the movie. (smile)

Sue made popcorn and they are ready to watch Intolerable Cruelty. They both sit on the loveseat, Sue nestle close to him. Jack’s arm is stretched out behind her. It feels so good to be with Sue just like this.  But some time later Jack notices that Sue fell asleep, so he clicks off the television set. He watches Sue sleeping for a long moment just memorizing her face. Her head rest against his shoulder, her hand in her lap.

When he called her name, Sue Wake up!  Wake up, sleepyhead. He touched her arm and shoulder but she didn’t stir. The movie is over, and George Clooney gets the girl. She didn’t open her eyes. She must be really tired. Now what should I do? I could let her sleep here on the couch and I go to my room if I can move without disturbing her. But Lucy will worry about Sue. Maybe I should give Lucy a call and let her know that Sue is fine. Jack kisses Sue on her forehead and tells her sweet dreams. Jack calls Lucy but gets the answering machine. He tells Lucy not to worry about Sue and hangs up the phone. Then he looks down at Levi, but he is also sleeping and won’t be able to wake Sue up anytime soon.

Jack: I’ll just take a quick nap. Then I will wake up Sue so she can go home. It’s not that late yet.

As it turns out, Jack fell asleep, his head on the armchair of the loveseat. In the morning, Sue finds herself stretch out on top of Jack, her head on his chest.  Levi wakes Sue by licking her leg. She blinks and opens her eyes; then stares around the strange room. Now she realizes she is at Jack’s house and not her apartment. Sue looks at Jack sleeping. He looks so peaceful she doesn’t want to wake him up just yet. Sue thinking: How am I going to explain this to him and what about Lucy?  Then Levi jumps on Jack and he wakes up with a jolt. He sees Sue and they have a moment of awkward silence between them. Levi is looking up at Sue and Jack with puppy dog eyes, he’s hungry.

Jack: Signing- I’m sorry. Speaking- I must have fallen asleep right after you did. I tried to wake you up but you were sound asleep. So I decided to take a nap then I was going to wake you up again so you could go home last night. It’s my fault.

Sue: Oh, no, that means I fell asleep last night during the movie? Signing- I’m so sorry. I really wanted to watch the movie with you. What about Lucy?

Jack: I called your apartment; Lucy wasn’t there, so I left a message telling Lucy that you were fine. You sleep okay?

Sue: Thanks for calling Lucy. Never better. I should go home, walk Levi and feed him. Signing-I’m really sorry that I fell asleep last night.

Jack: Hey. It’s no problem. A blow to my ego, that’s all. I never knew I was so boring with the ladies. (Laughs)

Sue: Oh, that makes it even worse. I feel terrible. You are not boring. I promise to make this up to you. And you get to have my mom’s famous ice cream dessert recipe. Do you forgive me? (smiles)

Jack: I’m glad you don’t think I’m boring. There’s nothing to forgive, Sue. We both fell asleep. It happens. No big deal. (Laughs)

Sue: I could stay here and make you breakfast if you want me to.

Jack: That’s very tempting. I’ll take a rain check for the next time you fall asleep on my couch. (Smile and lifts brow) But I know you want to take Levi home.

Sue: Yeah. I better go.

Jack: Uh Sue, why don’t you come back after you walk Levi?

Sue: Are you sure you want me too? I thought you might be glad to get rid of me by now. (Laughs)

Jack: I like having you around. But you better go before Levi thinks I’m food. (laughs)

Sue: Okay. I’ll come by later. Bye, Jack.
